Companies like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent have been phenomenally successful at growing B2C e-commerce platforms. Lazada has followed in its parent company Alibaba’s footsteps in South-east Asia. Daraz, which started life as a Rocket Internet venture, was acquired by Alibaba in 2018. It intends to emulate Lazarda’s success but in the South Asian markets of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar—a combined marketplace of almost 500 million, almost as big as Southeast Asia’s.
